Techniques for Improved Clinical Coaching

Understanding and applying the Coaching Approach is a key skill for clinical managers and frontline nurses.

How well do you listen?  Do you give constructive feedback to patients or staff that gets your point across without apologizing or making the other person defensive?

Clinical CoachingHome care nurses and managers use many interpersonal strategies when working to improve health outcomes for patients and nurses’ performance. But too often, these may involve solving the problem yourself, threatening adverse consequences, or teaching at people.  They might seem efficient, but these common approaches are not effective --  they do not engage others in critical thinking, self-reflection, self-learning or problem solving. These approaches can actually be an impediment to improving care and performance!

CHAMP’s Techniques for Improved Clinical Coaching course helps clinical managers acquire skills to actively engage nurses in their own professional development in improving the care they provide to patients.  This course also helps frontline nurses acquire skills to help empower patients and involve them in their own care, increasing adherence and satisfaction in nurses and patients alike.

More specifically this course helps the student to:
  • Gain experience using active listening strategies
  • Identify principles of giving feedback
  • Practice giving both positive feedback and feedback for improvement
  • Learn The Coaching Approach and gain experience using it with clinicians and patients

Mastering clinical coaching skills will enable you to:
  • Engage frontline nurses in their professional growth, so they seek their own solutions to clinical problems
  • Engage patients so they feel empowered, involved and more invested in their own treatment regimens and outcomes
