Tips for Testing Change

jane-croppedHello CHAMP Community!  Here is what I am learning from you:

How small a test can be!  Yes, you can try something out with one doctor on one patient,  learn about how the change might work in your system, identify barriers, and start to build will.  It is easier to convince a clinician to try something one time than it is to ask them to make a permanent change. Some tips for testing:

1. Be sure they know why they are testing and have input into the test design and prediction of the result

2. Plan ahead to the next test, i.e., if the test runs as you predict, what is the next step (answer should not be implementation! :-) )

How different actual processes can be from what you thought!  In order to really understand how a process currently works in your organization you have to go find out (observe, ask questions) – just because something works one way in one place, doesn’t mean it works that way in another.  Keep getting out and looking at how the system is working for your patients and don’t be afraid to ask why five times when you see process failures!

Can you share an example so your colleagues can understand this at the practical level?
